You want a pocketable 21700 that can go full turbo or stay simple – and you can pick which mood it wakes up in.
Confirm the listing says PD36R ACE, not PD36R Pro, PD36R V2.0, or PD36 TAC. Those are different lights.

Quick verdict
The PD36R ACE sits in the premium about $100-$150 tier. Fenix rates it up to 3,000 lumens (how bright) and 415 meters (how far the useful beam reaches), on a removable 21700 with hidden USB-C. The party trick is the SET switch: you can lock it to turbo-only, a three-level duty set, or the full five-level everyday set. This writeup is built from Fenix maker specs and published product pages – not a hands-on sample from this site.

What it is like in plain words
Think of a short tube that lives in a pocket, pack, or holster. One Luminus SFT70 Gen2 LED. Cool-white beam around 6500K per Fenix. You click the fat tail button for on, and tap the neck button to walk Eco to Turbo when you leave SET on the full option.
Unscrew the neck and you expose two secrets: the USB-C port, and the tiny SET button. Option 1 is turbo-first for simple patrol use. Option 2 keeps Eco, Med, and Turbo. Option 3 is the full everyday ladder plus SOS. Fenix lets you turn strobe on or off across those options. That is the whole pitch – same PD36R family shape, more say over the button menu.
Battery indicator in the neck switch flashes green or red so you know if you are full, mid, or nearly empty – Fenix only promises that behavior with its ARB-L21 series cell. Overheat protection will walk Turbo/High down when the tube gets hot; that is normal on a compact 3,000-lumen light. Keep spare O-rings from the kit and do not run unprotected cells. Who it is for
Buy this if you want one premium rechargeable tube for walks, work, camping, and security-style carry, and you care about being able to simplify the modes. Removable 21700 means you can carry a spare cell. Hidden USB-C keeps the seal cleaner than a rubber flap on many rivals.
Who should skip it
Skip it if you wanted a flat pocket slab, a dedicated kilometer thrower, or a budget tube under about $50. Also skip if you refuse to learn a second switch – the SET idea is optional, but the neck + tail layout is still two controls. If you specifically need the dual-tail PD36R Pro layout, that is a different Fenix model (and this site already covers a Pro compare elsewhere).

Closest rival
Against the Fenix TK20R V2.0, the ACE is the thinner EDC-leaning tube with programmable mode groups. The TK20R V2.0 keeps both controls on the tail, claims the same 3,000-lumen peak, and throws farther on paper (475 m). Pick ACE if you want SET customization and a slightly pocket-friendlier head. Pick TK20R V2.0 if you want classic dual-tail duty controls and more throw.
Honest catches
- Turbo is not an all-night setting. Fenix’s own FL1 note says Turbo runtime includes step-down from heat protection. Shop High and Med for real work.
- Name confusion. Amazon will show PD36R, PD36R Pro, PD36 TAC, and ACE. Match ACE in the title.
- SET needs the neck open. Changing options means unscrewing the neck. Fine at home; awkward in gloves mid-task.
- Cool white only. Fenix lists about 6500K. No high-CRI SKU called out on the product page we used.
- No desk sample here. Specs and photos are Fenix’s. This site has no beamshots or runtime graph of its own.
Should you buy it?
If you want a premium EDC-sized 21700 with up to 3,000 lumens, 415 meters of reach, USB-C, and a mode menu you can simplify, the PD36R ACE is Fenix’s answer in the about $100-$150 tier. Confirm the Amazon title says ACE, or buy from Fenix when you want the official kit.
